It’s always a fascinating story when somebody takes the “non-traditional” path to success! Less than two years before being chosen in the third-round of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, current Leaf prospect Andrew Nielsen was playing Midget “AA” in Red Deer. Former Toronto Maple Leaf forward Mike Johnson was also a late bloomer and was playing Tier II junior as a 17-year-old.
In the case of Mike Augello, the term “non-traditional” takes on an entirely different meaning. Back in 1997, he was a frequent caller on AM640’s Leafs post-game show “Leafs Talk.” Many Leafs fans can remember hearing the soothing voice of “Mike in Buffalo” who would always offer the voice of reason no matter what the result was for the blue and white on that particular evening.
So how does a kid from Western New York become a Toronto Maple Leafs fan? And how does that same kid end up working in the media covering those same Leafs and getting paid to do it? Those two questions and others are answered on this week’s episode featuring Mike “In Buffalo” Augello!
Next week’s episode will be a special “Leafs Prospects Edition” and we can’t think of a better guest than the one we have lined up. He is a former NHL executive and scout and is the director of scouting for TSN. He can be seen on the network as an analyst on the show’s “That’s Hockey” and “That’s Hockey 2Nite!” Buckle up everyone because we are going to take a very detailed look at the future of the Toronto Maple Leafs with Craig Button!
