It was announced today that the Leafs have signed right shot offensive-defenseman Joseph Duszak out of Mercyhurst University.
The 5’10” 185lb Franklin Square NY native produced a whopping 16 goals and 47 points in just 37 games for Mercyhurst, of the NCAA, this year.
This was his 3rd season as a member of Mercyhurst, and he’ll retire from the NCAA after having played 101 games while scoring 30 goals and 99 points.
Like the signing of Mac Holloway (another small, offensive RD) last week, this contract won’t kick in until next season, so while he is currently 21 years of age he’ll play his first pro season at the age of 22. There is still a lot of time to learn the ropes of the pro game at that age, so there’s hope that this signing can turn into something worth while further down the line.
On top of this it appears that Duszak is a good friend of Jeremy Bracco, which can only help in finding his way forward as a pro.

Also, there’s this encouraging tidbit:
NCAA Defence Points per Game
PPG (Age as of April)
Fox 1.38 (21)
Duszak 1.27 (21)
Makar 1.24 (20)
Butcher 0.86 (21) *16-17
Gostisbehere 0.81 (20) *13-14
I’m not saying that Duszak will be good but this isn’t bad company.

It appears he likes to shoot the puck, which shouldn’t be a surprise based on his goal totals. Toronto doesn’t have a ton of players that like to release bombs from the point, so that’s great news:
