Maple Leafs vs Red Wings
Good Afternoon Leafs fans.
With the preseason schedule almost complete, your Toronto Maple Leafs limp their way into the Motor City to face the Detroit Red Wings.
Many moons ago, even a pre-season tilt vs the Dead Things would be something to see. There would be fights, there would be hitting and their would be hatred.
Here we are decades later and the animosity has turned into mild dislike. And the fighting is usually non-existent.
There are a few story lines to watch this evening. One, the play of starter James Reimer. Expected to go this distance in this game, Leafs Coach Mike Babcock must be wondering “who exactly is my Number 1 Goalie?”. This is the chance for Reimer to stake his claim to the net on Opening Night. (BackUp Goalie will be Garret Sparks)
Story #2 and maybe more importantly is the response by the veteran laden lineup to the chirps from aforementioned Mike Babcock after last game. We all understand that training camp is an irritant to most players. They are looking to get through these games and onto the regular season. Not good enough for Babs. Clearly cranky after the lacklustre play during the last game, the newest Leafs bench boss called out players for playing an uninspired style of hockey.
To me, these players need to show attention to detail for the new systems implemented and show a concerted effort to NOT furn over the puck in stupid areas of the ice. (Talking to you Mr. Lupul and Mr. Kadri).
True, its a preseason game. It means NOTHING by the end of the season. However, it would appear to me that there is more on the line tonite and I know exactly what I think will happen. This is the same core, these are the same leaders. Fool me once….
ps. I still would love to win and be completely wrong about their expected performance.
Go Leafs Go.
