On Thursday afternoon, the Toronto Marlies announced the addition of Cal Heeter to the lineup for the 2017-18 Season.
The Marlies/Leafs have Garret Sparks, and Kasimir Kaskisuo scheduled to play for the AHL club this season, but this move might be important in a few areas.
First, will the Marlies move Kaskisuo back to the Orlando Solar Bears so he can get #1 minutes? Or will that go to Heeter?
Two, how confident is the Leafs organization in the overall ‘lower body’ health of Garret Sparks? Yes the Marlies #1 goalie was given a fresh deal (675k for next two years), but there has been an ongoing battle of injuries for the native of Illinois.
Three, with the Kaskisuo playing so well for the Marlies in the AHL Playoffs, when Sparks went down with an injury, should the team not see just how far he can improve in his play with more minutes?

Heeter, who is now 28 years old had an excellent showing in the 12 games that he played for Grand Rapids. A sparkling .933 save percentage and a 2.07 GAA definitely caught the attention of other AHL teams, but this is a high water mark scenario for the former Ohio State University Goaltender.
This addition should make training camp even more competitive, as Heeter would obviously prefer to get AHL time versus that of the ECHL when he played for the Toledo Walleye. Or is it Pickerel?
