It was announced Sunday afternoon that Garret Sparks will make his debut in net for the Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday evening versus the Edmonton Oilers.
Sparks currently has a 9 wins and 2 loss record with the Marlies and a sparkling 1.90 Goals against average and a .938 save percentage. The native of Elmhurst, Illinois stands at 6’3” and weighs 205 pounds. While possessing a solid sized frame that covers the net, Sparks also has athletic ability that enhances his ability to stop the puck.
Reports that former starting goalie, Jonathan Bernier is NOT pleased with the Coaching decision to start Sparks and refused to be interviewed after the practice. Turmoil is ahead in Leafs Land…..yet again.
In other news, the Toronto Marlies dropped their second game in a row today at the Ricoh Coliseum. The Marlies won the first game of three this weekend but have stumbled in the last two days. William Nylander added another assist in order to maintain himself as the AHL leader in points with 24 in 19 games. Antoine Bibeau had another rough game in the Marlies nets but too many undisciplined penalties cost, at inopportune times crushed any hope for a Marlies comeback after getting into a deep 3-0 hole after the first period.
Nikita Soshnikov continues to play well in all situations that Coach Keefe puts him in. Leading the team with 5 shots on goal today, Soshnikov played the penalty kill as well as powerplay minutes and never looks out of place performing in any role, which will continue to endear him to Keefe and will eventually lead him to NHL minutes as injuries start to mount.
Brendan Leipsic also had a solid game for the Marlies and has improved his overall play in the last few weeks. Now up to 13 points in 20 games (6 pts in last 6 games), Leipsic plays on the edge at times taking a rather ill-timed penalty when he dragged down the Habs prospect, McCarron. Leipsic will have to learn to control those mental mistakes but truly has been one of the better Marlies in the last two weeks.
Next Game at the Ricoh is Saturday December 5th, 2015 and it’s Star Wars theme night, costumes are encouraged. The Marlies will play on the road Friday evening (December 4th) in Rochester.
Today’s Attendance 6,859.
