Conclusion

It was clear in the Deadline Open Thread that there is a definite split among Leaf fans (surprise, surprise), related to whether or not what the Leafs did was enough. On the one hand, no core pieces were moved, and the rebuild will never be seen as commencing until that happens. On the other hand, the Leafs managed to move out a couple expiring contracts today (in addition to the earlier trades for Franson and Santorelli) and turned them into picks. There’s still plenty of time to make moves in the offseason. For some, that probably sounds like I’m an apologist for Shanny/Nonis, but I prefer to reserve judgment on the Leafs’ progress until after the offseason. Right now, it’s all about maximizing returns on assets. The market WILL change in the offseason as teams drop expiring contracts and gain cap space. That will help the Leafs. The key is to know when the right time is to pull the trigger. Clearly they determined that now is not the time. The offers just weren’t there, apparently.

So now we wait, and hope. It’s familiar territory…
