The Maple Leafs receive Nashville’s first round pick, Brendan Leipsic and Olli Jokinen in exchange for Cody Franson and Mike Santorelli.
Trade Thoughts (via Phook):
Jokinen, 36 years old, is a UFA at the end of the season and some are predicting that his contract is moved before he even laces up the skates in Toronto. The second part of this trade is Brenan Leipsic 20 years old and was originally drafted by the Predators in the third round (89th overall) during the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. A native of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Leipsic has appeared in 47 games with the Milwaukee Admirals (AHL) this season, collecting 35 points (seven goals, 28 assists) and 16 penalty minutes. Leipsic played four seasons (2010-11-2013-14) with the Winterhawks where he registered 302 points (132 goals, 170 assists) in 261 games. During the 2012-13 season Leipsic’s 120 points (49 goals, 71 assists) led the entire Canadian Hockey League in scoring. Leipsic will report to the Toronto Marlies.
This trade looks like a win for both sides but the Leafs entering house cleaning season, we have added exactly what we need. Prospects and picks. Much respect to Cody Franson who was one of the very few voices that would talk to the media even after the worst performances this team had during this awful season. Seems like a true leader, but as a UFA and with his age he can no longer be part of the plans in Toronto. Best of luck in Nashville.
David Nonis will be speaking to the media at 12pm (EST).
More trades to come….and this is a solid start, Leafs fans.
Prospect Report on Leipsic (via Dudgee):
Undersized high energy forward loaded with speed and skill. Hits everything that moves, providing the kind of energy shifts that can wake a team up. 2013 CHL scoring champion co-winner, alongside teammate Nick Petan. Can play centre and wing. Currently sits second in point production for the division leading Milwaukee Admirals, putting up good assist totals for his rookie AHL season. Has yet to replicate the goal scoring touch he had with Portland, but there is plenty of time.
Optimistically, Leipsic could follow the path of another Brendan…. Gallagher., as his skills, tenacity and size are freakishly similar, however Leipsic’s numbers in the CHL vs. Gallagher suggest there is more offensive upside.
