Early on Thursday afternoon, Chris Johnston of Sportsnet released a story saying that the Maple Leafs had put three players on LTIR earlier in the season, and it has created 15 million dollars in Cap overages allowed.
— Chris Johnston (@reporterchris) February 16, 2017
Normally this is the type of book keeping you would expect a team to make, but the fact they kept it on the down low is impressive for today’s age of social media and things exposed in 140 characters or less.
So if that isn’t enough, Johnston goes on to suggest that the Leafs will not only be sellers at the deadline, but they will also be buyers.
This type of allowance over the salary cap would give the Leafs an opportunity to go out and land a really big fish at the trade deadline. The story from Johnston, started a bunch of speculation on players like Shattenkirk, Anaheim’s young blueline of studs, and then there was this later on the afternoon:
I'm hearing some chatter that Toronto is suddenly in play for either Landeskog or Duchene

Say what you want about Dater but he is actually connected in Denver. If there was something to get leaked out of the Mile High city it would be from him, and I am not a huge fan of the rumour mill.
So you have all of cash, you have some tradable assets in the form of JVR, Gardiner, Bozak and a myriad of picks and prospects within the organization…..what would you do?
There is ZERO reason to move any of our young guns, but if you can get a Duchene how much are you willing to spend?
***UPDATE*** This was released just minutes ago for the Avalanche game tonite. Dubas is in attendance with 2 other members of Leafs scouting. ‘Hat Tip’ to Ingy for finding this one.

As an aside, it appears that Mitch Marner and the Leafs are continuing to consult with doctors into the early hours of the evening. The leading Rookie point getter was dinged up in an awkward fall last night in Columbus that has many worried about the condition of his shoulder.
From what I have been told, more than one meeting with doctors took place today, and concern is real.
John Shannon tweeted this out earlier this afternoon, and is 100% accurate.
Don't expect any news about Mitch Marner today. Toronto doctors examing the Leaf rookie.

More News as it arrives, fellow Leafs fans.
