Be forewarned, I am not a writer, I am just a guy with some thoughts who like’s to put them into words from time to time and hope people enjoy what they see if not well what are you reading this for huh get lost.
Picture this your at an event or celebration outside and it is perfect then all of a sudden off in the distance you hear the hum of a lawn mower at first it doesn’t bother you at all when it gets closer and louder until boom the mower is cutting right along the fence line of the event your at and you have no choice but to voice our opinion out loud to others, well this in many ways is the current state of the fan base of the Leafs follow the logic here, a media outlet here in Toronto floats a story on let’s say Marner going to the fourth line that is the mower off in the distance then it appears on social media damn that mower is getting louder and more annoying then BOOM people begin to spin it their own ways until it morphs into a whole ugly back and forth debate over what is wrong with him and the team not to mention the coaching staff hense that mower is on the fence line ruining our great start to a season.
Now that the analogy has been made I will fully admit, unlike some people who post and delete that I too have fallen into this vicious trap talking about Marner and his mental state like I have a degree in psychology. Another great example is just this weekend when we sign our playoff savior Roman Polak to a one year deal to shore up some grit on the back end something which I may add we could really use. Well twitter damn near imploded on its self and the battles ensued on why it was bad and why it is perfect like come on folks nothing better than to gripe over the return of the Roman empire?
When you sit back and look at everything why for once can’t we all get along when we are doing the right things on the ice and damn sure off the ice. I said it last year to Jude and Rob and double downed on it this year what we had last year was so much fun all Leaf fans from all walks of life came together and just celebrated the young players and what the future could hold at least in the circle I chose to follow which is pretty diverse in terms of Leafs coverage and fans alike. Fast forward to this year and the expectation train is heading towards dangerous territory again when maybe we should still be just enjoying having players like Matthews and company. Ask yourself how much did you enjoy last year watching with no expectations just whatever happens happens and leave it at that? I know I celebrated with Rob Ellis screaming about wanting playoff gravy on twitter when we made it cause it was just so unexpected and cool to be a part of.
We need to realize we are new to the dance still were not Pittsburgh or LA were the Leafs we are young hungry and up and coming but to steal something from the late Gord Downie the Leafs are like building a fire you place a log on the fire and you slowly stoke it until it sparks. The team does the work they create the “spark” we as fans sit back and watch what happens because really it’s not like we can do anything to change what happens so why not sit down stop the bickering and see where those sparks land and I’m sure the hard work will have us fireside soon enough.
