Yesterday, the Toronto Maple Leafs claimed Ben Smith on waivers from the Colorado Avalanche.
Smith’s name is familiar to the Leafs as he was on the team late last year after coming over in the James Reimer trade from San Jose.
Smith is expected to re-debut tonight when the Leafs face the Tampa Bay Lightning. He will wear number 18.
Last year in his brief stint, he played 16 games and scored six points. More importantly, he was a key faceoff guy with a 56.5 per cent success rate and can kill penalties.
Smith now will rotate on the 4th line with the likes of Peter Holland and Seth Griffith, another waiver claim who has yet to see any action so far for the Leafs.
The resulting move will bump Connor Brown onto the Nazem Kadri/ Leo Komarov line.
To make room for Smith, Milan Michalek was placed on waivers. He has until noon to clear and if so, he will join Colin Greening, Brooks Laich and Joffrey Lupul as other veterans shown the door so far this year.
Michalek was someone the team was counting on to provide some experience and offence but he has been practically invisible so far this year. There was some hope he would be productive and be someone the Leafs could move for a decent draft pick at the trade deadline. If he isn’t claimed, he could spend the rest of the final year of his contract with the Marlies in the AHL.
