MAPLE LEAFS (12-13-7) at COYOTES (15-15-2)
Fresh off a 7-4 victory versus the Colorado Avalanche on Monday, your Toronto Maple Leafs head into the desert to take on the the Phoenix/Glendale/Arizona Coyotes. Or is it Seattle?
With a potential victory this evening, the Leafs have a chance to even out the win-loss columns in the standings with a lucky thirteen of each. For those of you keeping track (and I know you are) the Leafs have also climbed out of the final position in the NHL standings much to the chagrin of some members of ‘Tank Nation’.
The game day skate is still to come (as of the writing of this update), and it would appear that Jonathan Bernier will get the chance to make it three in a row since his return from an AHL conditioning stint and after taking over for an injured Garret Sparks (still on IR…not expected back until after Christmas break). I cannot fathom putting in Antoine Bibeau this evening for the game, but it would make sense coming off of a back to back situation.
Leo Komarov is the Toronto Maple Leafs leading scorer right now. Yes, that is correct. The young native of Estonia has 24 pts in 32 games and continues to play solid minutes for Coach Mike Babcock. The willingness to get to high traffic areas, the desire to hit combined with talent have Komarov on a pace for a point total that not many thought possible. Of course I knew it all along. (insert sarcasm note here)
Jake Gardiner had an exceptional night on Monday while recording four assists. This hasn’t been accomplished since a rosy cheeked Czech did it by the name of Tomas Kaberle. Playing a much better ‘positional’ game this year under Babcock, Gardiner still only has 10 points on the season including last nights outburst.
Tonite’s game is the final battle before the Christmas break, the Maple Leafs will resume action on December 27th to start a home and home with the New York Islander. A win this evening will make the tofurkey and mashed potatoes taste that much better.
A very Merry Christmas to all of our loyal readers and your families. Nothing better than spending time wtih family and friends but remember, DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE !!
