Randy Carlyle and the Anaheim Ducks roll into Toronto tonight to take on the Leafs. They’ve lost 15 of their past 17 games and it seems that it’s only a matter of time before the former Leafs head coach will be looking for a new job. They gave up 6 goals in the first period against the Winnipeg Jets just two days ago, en route to dropping a 9-3 decision. They’ve been outscored 17-4 over their past 3 games in fact, and have lost that many in a row.
Simply put, the Leafs need to add to their misery tonight. The Ducks are a team starving for speed and skill right now and the Leafs have that in spades. They need to use that speed to break down the Ducks defense and get pucks on a goalie that isn’t exactly teeming with confidence these days.
Meanwhile, the Leafs are still in need of yet anther top 4 defense acquisition after they landed Jake Muzzin last week, and many believe these two teams would make terrific trade partners. With many fans eyes on Josh Manson as a possible trade target, I agree that on paper it makes sense for the Leafs, I’m just not sure the Ducks will think the same way.
Maybe another blowout will make them change their minds, and up the chances of them leaving one of their top 4 defenders in Toronto on their way out of town.
It would certainly help the Leafs if that happened, as they haven’t exactly been great as of late themselves. After a very disappointing loss to the Red Wings they rebounded to beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2 on Saturday night. It’s consistency that they’re lacking at the moment, with Frederik Andersen being arguably their only consistent performer. Bringing together a solid top 4 defense would go a long way towards settling things down during those times when the forwards are trying to get their footing.
Deadline day is getting closer, at least we won’t have to wait long to see if Kyle Dubas has another trick up his sleeve.
Andersen starts tonight, he’ll faceoff against John Gibson.
The rest of the lineup is unchanged from Saturdays win.
