The NHL Scouting Combine wrapped up just a few short days ago but not before close to 114 players undergo their physical testing component of the process. Each NHL team had the chance to interview the players of their choice this week and have learned much more about the prospects in terms of their personalities, background and family. Now the gruelling workouts are conducted, including the windgate and VO2 Max bike tests that aren’t very popular within the attendees year in and year out.
The combine has concluded for top prospect Auston Matthews. Matthews will most likely be the Toronto Maple Leafs 1st overall pick but that doesn’t mean Maple Leafs management weren’t focusing all of their eyes on the American. Leafs general manager Lou Lamoriello, assistant GM Kyle Dubas and director of player personnel Mark Hunter among others were on hand.
Combine results have Matthews listed at 6’2.25, 216 Ibs. Auston ranked in the top 25 for 4 of the 14 categories outlined by NHL Central Scouting. He ranked 12th in the VO2max with a score of 58.0 (ml/kg/min), as well as 12th in Mean Power Output with 11.9 (watts/kg), 9th in Peak Power Output 18.1 (watts/kg) both are classified under the “windgate” bike test, and 23rd with a wingspan of 76.75 inches.
Just as a comparison, below are the scores for the windgate and VO2 bike tests of present NHL star Jonathan Toews, a former 3rd overall pick of Chicago in 2006.
Here are Toews results along with the average scores, highest scores and worst scores for the 2006 NHL Combine.

Matthews tested higher than Toews in 2 of the 3 categories listed in this chart. Although take this comparison with a grain of salt as fitness has developed over the years when it comes to prospect training tactics and hockey specific training. Another aspect is the fact that Auston Matthews is 6’2 and weighed in at 216 pounds and in Toews was 6’1 and 190 or so pounds back in 2006.
The Maple Leafs select 1st Overall for the first time since 1985, when they selected fan favourite Wendel Clark. They also have a second 1st round pick in 2016, which they acquired in the Phil Kessel deal that sent him to Pittsburgh. They have less than three weeks until the NHL Draft and will very busy leading up to that all-important day on June 24th.
