The Leafs announced today that centre Alex Kerfoot, acquired alongside Tyson Barrie for Nazem Kadri, will be out indefinitely after he broke his face. It’s believed he originally sustained the injury after taking a massive high hit from Jeff Carter during a game on Nov 5th
Kerfoot originally sustained the injury on Nov. 5 vs. Los Angeles. After Kerfoot reported ongoing discomfort while the team was in New York to face the Islanders, consultation testing determined that surgery was required to repair the facial dental fractures. (2/2) #LeafsForever

A bigger person would avoid pointing out that there was no answer from the rest of the Leafs after the hit. Players of all types are allowed to walk over this team with impunity….. is what a smaller man would say.
While the Leafs do have centres Jason Spezza, Frederik Gauthier and Nick Shore at their disposal, all three have combined for just 10pts on the season, while Kerfoot has 8pts alone. They won’t bring the type of offensive game that you’d want from a 3rd line centre. The big problem is the Leafs have little to no cap space with a full, healthy roster, so trading for a replacement could prove difficult as it would have to be dollar in-dollar out.
Many would question a move to replace Kerfoot at this moment anyway, as a defensive upgrade may prove to be an even more dire need. Or is that a backup goaltender? A better PP and/or PK would really help as well. Replacement coach?
Maybe a full rebuild starting from the top down?
Either way, with Mitch Marner and now Kerfoot out, the mettle of this team will be tested even further than it has been. That has many fans questioning their ability to even make the playoffs.
Prove your worth Leafers. Leafs Nation is watching.
